The recent revolutionary changes in Eastern Europe raise important questions concerning the interplay of economics, the environment, and popular movements. Across the region, environmentalists were in the vanguard of the recent political changes. Green parties emerged and green candidates ran for office in the recent elections. Yet, throughout the region, the candidates who actually won the elections fall within the realm of "traditional" economics.
The environmental movement in Eastern Europe appears to be at a crossroads. This summit will include a description of the state of environmental degradation in Eastern Europe and its relationship to the economic policies of the former Communist regimes; the role of citizen environmental activism in the recent transformation; and some of the issues that will be faced by the Eastern European environmental movement in the future.
