The OTHER Economic Summit, TOES - 90, Houston, July 6 - 8, 1990

Energy and the Environment Summit

The two OPEC oil crises in the 1970s showed us how dependent we are on energy, and taught us that fossil fuel supplies are limited. Although the downturn in the world economy has slowed the growth of world energy demand and encouraged energy efficiency, current levels of consumption are clearly unsustainable. Energy analysis is one means by which we understand the workings of complex systems, be they economic, industrial or environmental. It may be unsettling to know that scientists are not in agreement on such crucial issues as renewable energy sources. For almost 20 years, this disagreement has frustrated policy makers, and often incapacitated the Department of Energy. This mini-summit will bring together scientists with divergent opinions on the nature of energy analysis and consumption and begin to establish an updated set of ground rules for energy systems analysis. This is the first meeting of such magnitude since 1975, when many of these same scientists met Stockholm, Sweden.
