The Economics of Hunger:
Share the Harvest of Peace

There are one billion hungry people in the world. One trillion dollars were spent last year to arm the world. What is needed to reduce the human suffering caused by hunger? Direct aid? Development aid? Changes in public policy on the part of the developed and developing nations? The answer is, all three. But it is critical that we understand the inter-relatedness of these three approaches. How can the G7 nations best solve the problems we have helped to create?

To understand this question, this workshop will help the participants build a framework for defining the problems, identifying causes, and suggesting solutions to the global tragedy of hunger. Too often people think the Chinese proverb - "Give a man a fish and tomorrow he will be hungry; teach a man to fish and he will feed himself for life" - is complete. It isn't until one adds, "Unless that man has a place at the pond from which to fish, all else is futile."

When these issues are properly understood, people will work together to change the public policies of the G7 nations which to date have had a devastating impact on the one billion people who face hunger every day. Bread for the World's Harvest of Peace Resolution represents a significant way to change the public policy of the United States. It is part of a three year campaign to end the arms race, promote peaceful resolutions of conflict, and redirect resources toward ending hunger.
