Transformation of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the 80s: At the Local, National, and International Levels
Citizens' organizations, often referred to as non-governmental organizations in the international community, have developed a growing level of political sophistication, professional organization skills, and the resources to communicate and strategize with colleagues across the globe.
At a time when the traditional roles and services that nation states have served and provided are under question at the community and international level, non-governmental organizations are in many cases filling the gap. These areas include:
- Exploitative labor policies.
- Economic development strategies.
- Gender and justice issues.
- Environmental regulations (i.e., exports of hazardous products).
- Critique of IMF, World Bank structural adjustment policies.
- Providing neighborhood and community services.
- The development of public policy.
These and other issues will be discussed by the following resource people:
Moderator:
- Michael McCoy, Former Senior Program Officer, UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service, New York.
- Fausto Amador, Director, COPAN (Comité de Participación Nacional), San Jose, Costa Rica; Tel: 011 - 506 - 535581.
