The OTHER Economic Summit, TOES - 90, Houston, July 6 - 8, 1990

Learning From Traditional Agriculture

Awareness is growing in many academic and applied realms that traditional and indigenous peoples' production systems, which are everywhere defined by the absence of industrial energy subsidies, are supported by much knowledge and many cultural practices relevant and potentially applicable to sustainable agriculture. In most such contexts the culture of agriculture has been the primary context for learning and retaining useful knowledge. But the life-sustaining efforts of food farmers, who are often women, must itself be understood in the larger contexts of home, community, and ecological maintenance. These efforts thus encompass hydrology, pharmacology, resource management, teaching and learning, and traditional health and healing as well as macro nutrient production.

Because the full extent of interest in this important topic is not readily identifiable, the roundtable will be organized as a true discussion session with exchange of information about interested parties' perspectives and projects as the main objective. Specific outcomes of the session will include a published summary of the discussion including a list of session attendees and other interested parties annotated with notes about their interests and projects, and an annotated list of publications, projects and other resources relevant to this important area. People who are not able to attend the Houston event should send brief descriptions and/or statements of interests and bibliographic suggestions, including annotations, to the organizer, Larry Smith, at the address below, for inclusion in the roundtable summary publication.
