CEREs, the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economics, is a broad union of major environmental groups and socially responsible investment institutions working to ensure that capital is invested in environmentally sound ways. In September 1989, CEREs announced the Valdez Principles, an environmental code of conduct which is intended to guide corporations in the establishment of environmentally sound policies. The principles stress issues such as protection of the biosphere, air and water; wise use of natural resources; waste minimization and recycling; and efficient energy use. This workshop will focus on the reasons for the development of the Valdez Principles, how they compare to other activities, and how investors, shareholders and consumers can use them. The panel will discuss the differences between corporate codes, as well as examine the issue of public accountability and what an environmental audit would entail.
