In contrast to mainstream economists, we see the human problems of the modern organization of work (capitalist or communist) as the consequence not of top-down control in the service of efficiency, but of control serving the interests of the bosses. The ideological dominance of episteme has played a crucial role in the success of the project of both capitalists and commissars to take control of the production process. An example is scientific management, which not only allowed bosses to appropriate the workers' knowledge of production, but also to recast this knowledge from a techne that was the basis of workers' control to an episteme that became the basis for the boss's control. This workshop will investigate the possibilities for reasserting workers' control over work, and the role of systems of knowledge in this process.
