Peoples' Summit / TOES '97 Finances

The Peoples' Summit and TOES-USA are truly volunteer organizations. Nobody is getting paid. We don't even have any money to reimburse out-of-pocket expenses like phone bills and postage, which is why we are relying so heavily on e-mail and this web site. With the exception of Right Livelihood Award winners, whose travel is being underwritten by the Right Livelihood Awards Foundation, and a generous grant of $3,000 to the Abya Yala Fund for Indigenous Self-Development in South and Meso America to underwrite the travel expenses of Latin American indigenous speakers to the conference, all speakers, organizers, volunteers and other personnel are finding their own money for travel and accommodations, and are even being asked to pay the same registration fees as everyone else.

As of mid-June, TOES had taken in a little over $6000 in registrations at the Secretariat office, as well a half dozen or so generous donations in the $50 - $500 range. We obtained an interest-free loan of $4000 from a supportive individual that must be repaid out of registration receipts. In addition, the Denver Peoples' Summit organization has collected something in excess of $600, and TOES organizers pledged approximately $3000 in 1996.

Although we applied to over 20 foundations for money to underwrite the travel and expenses of Third and Fourth World speakers, we received only a promise of $2,500 to be disbursed after the conference is over. The "Women's Summit" received a $1,000 grant, and the Threshold Foundation and others helped underwrite the eight workshops conducted by the 50 Years is Enough Campaign.

Registration receipts and the $4,000 loan enabled us to print brochures, pay for the Auraria campus conference site ($5,000), and reserve a block of dormatory rooms at the University of Denver and buses to transport participants to and from the dorms and Auraria ($1,600).
