The Peoples' Summit/TOES '97 - Denver
The OTHER Economic Summit, June 20 - 22, 1997
"Working Alternatives: A World That Works"
TOES History:
- Summit 2000 is being organized in Okinawa, Japan. Contact: Mr. Makishi Yoshikazu (family name first, as is customary in Japan), maxi@ryukyu.ne.jp.
- Alliance Cologne 99/Bündnis Köln 99, June 18-20, 1999. A broad alliance of NGOs organized a variety of activities. The organizations included BUND (Friends of the Earth, Germany), Projekt Interkonti, Medico International, Terre des hommes, WEED, Reclaim the Streets (London), Les Périphériques vous parlent, Inter Continental Caravan, Peoples' Global Action, Pericles, France, the youth organizations of the Social Democratic Party and the Green Party (which are now the government), womens' organizations, church groups, immigrant groups, trade unions, human rights organizations, etc.
- TOES '98 - UK was organized by the New Economics Foundation (NEF).
- TOES '97 - Denver.
- TOES '96 - Australia. The TOES movement is alive and flourishing "down under". TOES Australia produces a regular high quality newsletter, which is distributed to members.
- TOES '96 - Lyon, France: "Contre Sommets"
- There were at least 8 "contre sommets" in Lyon. This site is a sub-site of the home page for the official French government archives of the G-7 summit which are maintained at the University of Lyon. You can access the home page of the archives by clicking on the "Home" icon at the top of the "contre sommet" page. The archive home page lists several other sites critical of G-7 policies besides the "contre sommets" in which TOES participated. The French government seems incredibly tolerant of criticism.
- Program of "Contre Sommet: Quelles Alternative a la Mondialisation?", with Helena Norberg-Hodge, Vandana Shiva, Susan George and Martin Khor, among others. In French only. If you would like to read some of their work in English, search for them in the People Centered Development Forum archives.
- Critiques of the G-7 from Lyon
- Contre Sommet Prospectus (in French).
- French Government G7 home page, the ordinary G-7 summit's web site (in French and English). Not to be confused with the official archive. This site dispensed information about the G-7 Summit only as it was happening. It's basically an internet version of what the press gets from the G-7 press office. If we wanted the press to come to our conference as well as the ordinary summit, this is where we'd want to be listed.
- TOES '95 - 3rd TOES Australia, held at the University of Adelaide, Adelaide, December 1995. The TOES movement is alive and flourishing "down under". TOES Australia produces a regular high quality news-letter, which is distributed to members. Copies of the Proceedings of the 3rd Australian TOES are still available at a cost of $10.00 per copy (including postage). Requests, together with remuneration, may be forwarded to: 3rd TOES convenor, PO Box 505, Modbury, SA 5092, Australia. Further information about the 3rd TOES may be obtained from the web site of Economic Reform Australia (ERA): http://dove.mtx.net.au/~hermann/erahome.htm, or from Dr. John Hermann, convenor of the 3rd Australian TOES, e-mail: hermann@dove.net.au.
